Tumbarumba

Tumbarumba Shire offers a great diversity of scenery, from the rugged peaks of the Kosciuszko Main Range to the meandering course of the Murray River.  Kosciuszko National Park is right on the doorstep, and the development of forestry plantation and the Snowy Mountains Scheme has resulted in good road access.

The Tumbarumba district has gradually developed from a grazing and gold mining community into a broadly based agricultural and forest industries economy. Four distinct seasons provide an opportunity for the local vineyards to produce the premium cool climate wines ; Tumbarumba’s vineyards are recognised for the production of the intense fruit flavour in both the chardonnay sparkling and table wine, and the sauvignon blanc and pinot noir are also impressive.

Find out more about the heritage of Tumbarumba Shire by visiting the Tumbarumba Museum, located in the historic building which also houses the Tumbarumba Visitor Information Centre. Displays include the story of the Southern Cloud aircraft, mountain cattlemen,  and goldmining.

Walking, camping, and fishing are the activities enjoyed by a large number of visitors year round.  Khancoban pondage features easy access for water sports, and offers some of the best trout fishing in Australia.  In winter, the snowfields of Mount Selwyn are only around one hour’s drive from Tumbarumba, and Khancoban worth considering as a base from which to visit Thredbo.
