Privacy policy

In this policy, “us”, “we” or “our” means Snowy Valleys Council, operator of the Snowy Valleys Way website.

We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and, where it applies to us, the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

We may review and update this privacy policy from time to time, including to take account of new or amended laws, new technology or changes to our operations. All personal information we hold is governed by the most recently updated policy.

This privacy policy was last updated on 22 October 2026.

1. Information we collect

The personal information we collect falls into three categories: contact details, click trails and correspondence.

Contact details are collected only when you supply them to us, for example when you email us.

Click trails record the paths visitors take through the website. This information is generally recorded against an IP address.

Correspondence consists of enquiries you send us by email, or other contact you have with us, such as phone calls.

This website does not offer user accounts, online payments or the ability to post comments, so we do not collect passwords, credit card details or published content through it.

2. How we collect it

Contact details and correspondence are collected when you supply them to us directly.

Click trails are recorded by our servers and analytics service as each request reaches the website. This includes but is not limited to:

  • the type of browser you are using
  • the date and time of your visit
  • your IP address
  • the address of the website that referred you to ours
  • the addresses of pages you access and any documents you download.

Click trails can be correlated over time by the use of cookies, as outlined in section 6. In most cases click trail data does not directly identify you.

Some features of the website are provided by third-party services, which receive technical information such as your IP address when your browser loads them:

  • Google Analytics, to measure how the website is used
  • Mapbox, to display the interactive maps
  • Adobe Fonts, to display the website’s typefaces
  • Cloudflare, to deliver the website quickly and protect it from malicious traffic.

3. Why we collect it and how we use it

We collect your contact details and correspondence:

  • to respond to requests or queries you raise
  • to confirm your identity when you ask to access or correct your information.

We collect click trail data:

  • to measure and monitor the performance of our website
  • to understand which parts of the region and route interest visitors
  • to refine and update our website’s content
  • to monitor our website for misuse or breaches of any applicable law.

4. How we disclose it

We do not sell your personal information. We may disclose it to third parties in the following circumstances:

  • when you explicitly authorise us to do so at the time you supply the information
  • to service providers who host, maintain and support the website on our behalf, and only for that purpose
  • as required or authorised by any applicable law
  • as part of any investigation into misuse of our website, including to your internet service provider or network administrator
  • if we have reason to believe you have engaged in unlawful activity and reasonably believe disclosure is necessary, including to the police or any other enforcement body
  • to lessen or prevent a serious threat to a person’s health or safety.

5. Links to other websites

This website links to many other websites, including visitor information centres, regional tourism sites, accommodation providers and trail operators. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those websites, and your use of them is governed by their own privacy policies.

6. Cookies

Cookies are electronic tokens containing small amounts of information that are passed between a web browser and a server. They are used to maintain information between pages, or between visits if you return to the website at a later time.

We use cookies to measure how visitors use the website. Our third-party service providers may also set cookies or use similar browser storage to provide their services, such as displaying maps and filtering malicious traffic.

7. Opting in and out

You may opt out of the correlation of click trail data by turning off cookies in your browser, or by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Disabling cookies may reduce the functionality available on the website, including the interactive maps.

We do not send marketing communications through this website. If you receive any communication claiming to be connected with us that you believe has been sent other than in accordance with this policy, or in breach of any law, please contact us as outlined in section 10.

8. Information management and security

We take all reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information we hold is not lost, misused or provided to unauthorised third parties, including by means of firewalls, access controls, encryption of data in transit and secured servers.

You acknowledge that the security of communications sent by electronic means cannot be guaranteed. You provide information to us via the internet at your own risk. We cannot accept responsibility for misuse or loss of, or unauthorised access to, your personal information where the security of that information is not wholly within our control.

We are not responsible for the privacy or security practices of any third party, and the collection and use of your information by third parties may be subject to separate privacy and security policies.

If you suspect any misuse or loss of, or unauthorised access to, your personal information, please contact us immediately as outlined in section 10.

9. Gaining access to your information

You have the right, subject to the exceptions set out in privacy law, to seek access to and correct the personal information we hold about you. If you make an access request, we will ask you to verify your identity.

If you would like to access the personal information we hold about you, please contact us as outlined in section 10.
